Adaptation of English fiction Silver by Penny Jordan.
I am surprised to see a manga adaptation of Silver by Penny Jordan. Yes, I've read the book, I do have it on my shelf and it is one of my favorites. It hooked me up completely since I admire people that do anything just to obtain the sweet taste of revenge, a taste that lasts for a few moments but unlike all these shitty puritanical philosophers, I think that it is worth it. It stands in our nature, mankind has it and it is not a sin nor a good deed rather a desire, that needs to be fulfilled like any other.
Geraldine Francis is the daughter of a wealthy aristocrat. All her life, she never actually experienced pain nor sadness, she was sheltered by her father and guided by him. However, wolves do not have a schedule and she is viewed as a nuisance by Charles her cousin, who's action are unknown to her. She falls in love with him, unknowing that Charles actually wishes to obtain her fortune.
After the death of her father and the cruel treatment and cold showers that she receives from her relatives and from Charles, she decides to fake her own death to prepare her revenge against Charles, willing to sacrifice anything, her past, her wealth, her body even the ones that she holds dear, only to fulfill this desire.
As years pass, step by step she gets closer to her goal. She suffers plastic surgeries in order to change her appearance, she comes up with her own story posing as a rich widow at the age of 21. She even hires someone for 2 million $ to teach about sex and to become an enchantress only to find out that the person who is supposed to teach her is actually an old acquaintance, a person that she holds dear. The result is remarkable, from a person that seemed like a wreck, she becomes a beauty that would make married men fall for her and also a person that maintains her purity inside and shows a seductive mask in front of other persons, especially in front of persons that she wishes to manipulate.
Such determination is commendable but for such a desire, feelings might overlap, from admiration to pity. As the desire for revenge grows, the sacrifices that she has to make grows as well. However, will she be able to obtain her revenge but also, to remain with the person that she loves at the same time?
To go to such extents, doubts appear, especially when true love is involved in contrast with a strong desire for revenge. This manga has a very intriguing and thought-provoking plot, its a new experience for everyone and it is also something that keeps in suspense. Art-wise and story-wise this manga is almost perfect, it does not lack character development either but it is not the main focus of this manga.
I hope that the end of it comes soon, but as it stands, it mostly gets praises from me. The only thing that bothered me about it, is the very long time that was allocated in order to develop the first half, where it described the events that led to Geraldine's desire for revenge (later she will change her name into Silver Montagne).
It has some brief funny moments but melodrama dominates this manga. With this kind of plot it stands as a pretty addictive kind of manga, one that surely will not disappoint. If the manga will have the same course of action like the book had, I think we are in for a feast.
